Curiosity: the Mind’s Pointer
Only the dead should be bored. With the roller coaster that is life, how can any living human being be bored? Here’s an elixir for any boredom and lethargy that you might be experiencing: curiosity!
Curiosity did not kill the cat. In fact, curiosity gave the cat information that allowed it to escape from danger- that’s why it (the cat) has 9 lives!
A curious mind is one that is hungry for knowledge, always seeking, learning, growing and creating.
A curious mind is positive; it might occasionally get downcast, but it doesn’t stay there for long- there’s so much to see and know and to do!
A curious mind is humble, open to new things and people, it’s never contented with the “normal”. A curious mind is a creative mind- creative minds give the world its innovations and new discoveries in every field of endeavor.
A creative mind is Alive!! Don’t just breathe through your nostrils- use your mind, too! Just like the lungs need oxygen to stay healthy and alive, so too, your mind needs to engage in imaginative stimulating pursuits, if it’s not to turn to mush.
The mind’s oxygen is NEW, positive and creative thoughts. This means that when the mind is idle, or when negative thoughts are allowed sway, the mind is slowly but surely wasting away and dying like a moisture-deprived flower wilts away in a hot summer day.
Don’t hoard stale information and things- or even people! Constantly renew and refresh your mind’s life source like a mighty river receives new infuses of water from its varied tributaries. Venture out into the jungle that is life. Life is meant to be an adventure.
Don’t hoard life; rather spend it, but wisely, of course. Ecclesiastes 3:22 puts it this way: “So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will happen after him?” There’s no “after” after you! This is it! Life is today! Now! Are you content with what you current know and have done! Could you do learn more and do more if you were just a little more curious about the world and the people in it?
True, as you venture out, you might meet a ferocious lion down your path; but it’s also possible that you might meet the goose that will lay you many golden eggs! So come alive!! What are you waiting for? Life? What do you think this is?!?!??!?
Take a look at some snippets from one of my ALL-TIME favorite poems, Ulysses. In this poem, Alfred Lord Tennyson says it way better:
“I am become a name, for always roaming with a hungry heart…
…How dull it is to pause, to make an end, to rust unburnished, not to shine in use!
AS THOUGH TO BREATHE WERE LIFE! Life piled on life were all too little, and of one to me.
Little remains; but every hour is saved from that eternal SILENCE, something more, a bringer of new things; and vile it were for some three suns to store and hoard myself,
And this grey spirit YEARNING in desire to follow knowledge like a sinking star, beyond the utmost bound of human thought…”
There surely is a worthy cause that you’re curious about, that you would follow like a sinking star, beyond the bounds of common conventional knowledge and wisdom? Be curious! Come alive!
Enjoy, et allez vivre!!!!
